St Nicholas of Myra was born in Patara, near Myra in 280 BC, and became one of the early Christian bishops during the time of the Roman Empire. It is said that he gave away all of his wealth and traveled extensively to help the poor and sick. One of the best-known stories is the time he saved three poor sisters from being sold into slavery or prostitution by their father by providing the dowry. Many miracles were attributed to his intercession that’s why he is also remembered as Nicholas the Wonderworker.
Today’s Santa Claus came to life thanks to St Nicholas’ popularization in America by the Dutch of New Amsterdam (today’s New York) in 1773, who honored the anniversary of his death every year on December 6.
